Latest Vaccination Chart for Indian Babies – 2019

Vaccines are a simple way to boost your childтАЩs immune system. When babies are born they get a small amount of immune protection from antibodies passed on from their mother in the womb and through breast milk. However, these are not sufficient and neither do they protect from all diseases.

The slightly modified form of a disease-causing organism is used for making vaccines. Today a combination of these organisms can be used in one vaccine, to limit the number of vaccinations your child gets. The basic principle through which a vaccine works is by creating immune memory to certain organisms. When a childтАЩs immune system is exposed to the organism within a vaccine, it starts to form memory towards the infectious organism. So, when your child is exposed to a similar organism in the near future, the body is already prepared with its defence mechanism.

Immunization Schedule

Now that we know the mechanism of how a vaccine works, letтАЩs discuss the vaccine schedule.

Vaccines given at birth

  • Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV)
  • Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG)
  • Hepatitis B (1)

Vaccines given at 6 weeks

  • Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus (DPT 1)
  • Hep B (2)
  • Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV 1)
  • Rotavirus (1)
  • Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV 1)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB 1)

Vaccines given at 10 weeks

  • Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus (DPT 2)
  • Hepatitis B (3)
  • Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV 2)
  • Rotavirus (2)
  • Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV 2)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB 2)

Vaccines given at 14 weeks

  • Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus (DPT 3)
  • Hepatitis B (4)
  • Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV 3)
  • Rotavirus (3)
  • Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV 3)
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB 3)

Vaccines given at 6 months

  • Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV 1)
  • Influenza (after the first dose given in first 6 months, keep repeating it in yearly frequency)

Vaccines given at 9 months

  • Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR 1)

Vaccines given at 12 months

  • Hepatitis A

Vaccines given at 15 months

  • Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR 2)
  • Varicella (1)
  • PCV (Booster 1)

Vaccines given between 16 to 18 months

  • Hepatitis A (2)
  • DPT (Booster 1)
  • IPV (Booster 1)
  • HiB (Booster 1)

Vaccines given between 4 – 6 years

  • DPT (Booster 2)
  • Varicella (2)
  • Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR 3)

All the vaccines listed above are mandatory for all children. There are a few vaccines that are considered optional, and can be discussed with your pediatrician prior to their administration. The list of optional vaccines include:

  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • Japenese encephalitis vaccine
  • Cholera vaccine

Notes about your childтАЩs vaccination schedule

  • Oral polio vaccine is replaced by inactivated polio vaccine as soon as possible. If access to IPV is limited this can be replaced with three doses of OPV.
  • The first dose of Influenza can be given after six months of age. This is one vaccine that should be given on a yearly basis.
  • The Human Papillomavirus vaccine can be given as early as 9 years of age.

What are some of the common myths surrounding vaccines?

Myth 1:

Vaccines donтАЩt cover serious diseases.

Fact:

All the vaccines cover quite serious diseases. Children are more prone to the dire consequences of any infection due to their nascent immune system. Therefore, vaccinations, especially on schedule, are vital.

Myth 2:

My babyтАЩs natural immunity is better than a vaccine.

Fact:

Natural immunity usually kicks in only after exposure to the environment. It is great to know that the small exposure to infectious organisms in vaccines helps to amplify immune responses multiple times if your child is exposed to the organism again.

Myth 3:

Vaccines cause autism.

Fact:

This was a widely held myth for a long time following a paper that was published in 1997. The statements made in this paper have been discredited. Autism is not a side effect associated with vaccines.

Myth 4:

The organisms in vaccines can cause a full-blown infection in my child.

Fact:

A fever, swelling or slight irritability are all subtle effects to the vaccine, but not an indication of an infection. This usually subsides within a day or two following the vaccine.

Myth 5:

If my baby is ill they shouldnтАЩt be receiving the vaccine.

Fact:

Mild illness should not be a hindrance to maintaining the normal vaccine schedule. Children can be given a vaccination if they have a slight fever. A paediatrician should ideally examine the child prior to vaccination. Vaccines can be delayed by a few days if your child has a high fever.

Myth 6:

It is not safe to give more than one vaccine at a time.

Fact:

In most instances, all vaccine doses are given on a single day. As per schedule, the vaccines have to be followed up with dose 2, dose 3 and so on on the same day. Today, many vaccines come as combinations, where one vaccine vial contains the vaccination against several organisms.

Vaccinationation Essentials

  • It is vital to stick to the vaccination schedule that your paediatrician has prepared following the birth of your child. If you skip as vaccination date, visit your paediatrician at the earliest to reschedule the appointment.
  • All vaccinations are important for your child. Only the optional vaccines are a choice that you can discuss with your paediatrician. Optional vaccines are given based on the risk factors that your child might be exposed to.
  • Recently there has been the introduction of the тАЬpainlessтАЭ vaccine. Study the benefits of this vaccine for your child. Do not go for anything without complete information regarding the same.
  • Your child may experience a fever following the vaccination visit. This is a normal response to the vaccine. Your paediatrician may offer paracetamol drops. You can also give your baby a light sponge bath. If the fever is higher than 102 degrees, do consult with your paediatrician.

Vaccines are a basic requirement for your child during their first few years of development. Due to the environmental exposures to various infectious organisms, as well as their young developing immune systems, they are at an increased risk of severe consequences if they contract any viral or bacterial infection. A vaccine helps to boost their immune system when exposed to such infections, which in turn helps to negate the serious effects of the various infections.

    Actually my EDD was 5-Nov.
    I had delivered a baby boy on 12-oct i.e at 37 week.
    When I went to Doctor, she has calculated 6 vaccinations from my EDD instead of my delivery date.is it ok?

  5. Hi, my daughter is 3 months old now n her vaccination is getting delayed by 3 to 4 weeks. Is it OK. And acc to chart the vaccination is not gvn to my baby. She was introduced to bcg after a week of her birth and also she was not gvn rotavirus and IPV vaccination when she was one n half month old and also 2 n half month old. Can she still be vaccinated for them

  7. my baby date of birth is 15-12-2014, in Dec-17 1dose and Jan-18 1dose total 2dosage we had given pneumococcal vaccine , the doctor said that 1more vaccine and 1 booster have to give total 4dose each 3800 is that cost correct and the dose ml doctor not showing us ,please share picture of dosage in syringe .please guide us.

According to the Recommended Immunization Schedule for Persons 0 тАФ 6 years of age, children may receive up to 24 vaccinations to protect them from up to 14 diseases by the time they’re 2 years of age.     My girl is 2months 20 days Completed Today Vaccine Given Rotovirus 2 Given today and PCV 2 not Given. Doctor Said to give after 2-3 days its correct or not. and Please Share the Cost of Rotovirus 2 and PCV 2 in Private Hospital.

    • Yes vaccinations can be given a couple of days before or after the date ordered. There might be a possible reason that the doctor has ordered it for another day. Regarding the costs of the vaccines, as mentioned in the article, ideally PCV should cost in between Rs 3800 to 4800 and Rotavirus between 900 to 1099. Kindly confirm the costs again with your doctor.

  26. My baby is 12 months old , i got a message from immune to vaccinate HEP A1 . Hepatitis A is not in Govt Vaccination Chart. is it equal to vitamin A?

      No, it is not equivalent to Vitamin A. Hep A is protection against Hepatitis A virus which is quite common in India. It is spread mainly through contaminated food and water.

      Pneumococcal vaccination is mandatory for children this age and you must get the baby vaccinated. Like the article mentions the vaccine should cost around Rs. 3800 to 4800. Hope this helps. ЁЯША

      Frequent passing of stool is not much of a concern. If it is more than 10 times a day and is very watery then you should consult with your paediatrician. Else there is no reason to halt the vaccination.

      It would be best to speak to your paediatrician. Ideally IPV is given before the second dose of OPV. Maybe something can be worked out with your paediatrician based on the baby’s vaccination schedule.

      It would be best to take your daughter to a paediatrician who can assess all the vaccinations she has taken and the ones that can be given now. Accordingly a schedule will be prepared and make sure to follow it as the paediatrician recommends. Vaccinations are very important for children’s health. Though you don’t need to panic, still do follow the paediatrician’s advice carefully and don’t miss any vaccination suggested in the schedule.

    Is this all right or she should get some additional vaccines?

      Has your daughter received all these vaccinations since birth?
      Can you please mention the doses of all the vaccinations she has received. Ideally you should have an immunization card that tracks all your daughter’s vaccinations, kindly refer to that card to see if your child is on track. And what are the next vaccinations in the series.

      Hepatitis A and Varicella are optional vaccines, thus do not stress. These vaccines can be given, just consult with the baby’s paediatrician and decide accordingly. Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

    • IPV stands for Inactivated Polio Vaccine. It contains only Polio vaccine. You still need to get other vaccinations done. Please follow the full schedule in the above table. You can even take a printout of the PDF for your offline reference.

    • There r two types of pcv..one is pcv 10- cost is around тВ╣1600-2000/-, another one is pcv 13, cost is around тВ╣3800-4000/-. You can opt for any one. Pcv10 is against 10 most common pathological pneumococcal stain and pcv 13 is for 13 most common pathological strain.

  46. My baby girl has completed 9 months on 10-6-2017. The pediatrician have asked to come for influenza vaccine on 10-07-2017. She (pediatrician) didn’t told us about which type of influenza vaccine? Another thing is vaccine costs taken by her varries drastically as compared to that taken by some of my colleagues pediatricians. I want to learn about the type of influenza vaccine that need to be given to my baby as per her age and its respective cost. Timely help and guidance by anyone would be highly appreciated.
