Being a first-time parent in India means you will get lots and lots of parenting advice from each and every person you are going to meet. And believe me, it all starts in the hospital itself from the very moment your little angel is born. We all have our close set of family, friends and well wishers who come to see the baby and mom in the hospital itself.
My baby was born through c-sec in morning and a very close relative of ours visited us the very same day. The moment she came to know that baby was born in the morning, her first reaction was “Oh my God, your son born in the morning, now he is definitely going to give you lots of sleepless nights”.
When my mother-in-law asked her why she said like that, she reasoned it by saying that babies born during day time usually sleeps more during day and stay awake more at night and vice versa.
On hearing her logic, I and my saasu-ma burst out laughing, I was holding my tummy and laughter as my stitches were paining but I really couldn’t control my laughter.
Only God can know from where these ladies come up with such theories. If this would have been true then all people who go for planned c-section would have opted for night delivery so that they can get baby who will sleep well through the night.
When a baby is born after being in the mother’s womb for 9 months, he/she doesn’t know the difference between day and night. It’s we, the parents who have to adjust him/her with the outside world and make them comfortable as they are totally dependent on us for all their needs and also they trust us only.
Babies are innocent beings whom we have to help out so that they can get themselves adjusted in this outer environment. There is no baby who sleeps throughout the night. On some days the baby is going to sleep well, but then there will be teething phases, cold and flu, growth spurts that will disturb their sleep. There is no easy solution for baby’s sleep problem.
I have some good-hearted tips and tricks for you which will help your baby sleep better throughout the night.
#1. Consistent time
Set a particular time for the baby to sleep. Don’t skip the timings whatsoever. Even in the initial days when you have loads of guests who want to be with the baby till late, make it a point that at baby’s sleeping time you take him/her to his/her room and make him/her sleep.
#2. Make a routine
Make a bedtime routine to give a bath/sponge to the baby before sleeping or you can also read books before sleeping. You can always give a light massage to baby before making him/her to sleep, it will help in getting a good night sleep.
#3. Switch off the lights
When it is babies’ sleeping time at night, switch off the lights and just a keep a sim light on. It will eventually help baby in understanding that lights off means it’s time to sleep.
#4. Sing a lullaby
Singing a song or lullaby comforts and soothes the babies and makes them sleep better at night and when they hear your voice in background while in light sleep, it assures them that they are not alone and you are there by their side.
#5. Put babies back to sleep immediately after feeding and burping
After night feeds burp your baby and immediately make him/her sleep again. They might take some time initially to sleep again but will get used to it soon .
#6. Don’t play with baby when he gets up at night
When babies get up for night feed, they take time to go back to sleep again. Keep trying to make them sleep again.
Babies give the cutest smiles and prettiest glances with their beautiful eyes when they wake up at night which makes it even more temptatious to play with them.
But we should strictly not play with them as they really don’t know the difference between day and night and if we start playing at night also they will get confused and will expect to play whenever they wake up.
#7. Co – sleeping
If your baby is finding hard to settle without you and if you are breastfeeding your baby, co-sleeping would be a good option. But you definitely need to keep following points in mind:
- Make sure the bedding is firm.
- Never sleep with baby on a chair or a sofa.
- Make sure the bed is big enough to accommodate you and baby.
- Never sleep with baby if you are under influence of alcohol or taking any sedatives
#8. Comfortable clothing
Make sure the baby is wearing comfortable clothes while sleeping and are not making him/her feel too hot or too cold. The best way is to think what you would be wearing to sleep and accordingly dress up the baby.
#9. Never let a baby cry out
Please don’t let the baby cry out to sleep. These little angles are to be loved and cuddled. Never leave a baby to cry and soothe himself to sleep. Please remember they will outgrow soon and won’t need you for all such small things in future and at that time, you are going to miss it all. So make out most of it, pamper your baby with lots of cuddles and hugs and make them feel special.
I hope my first-hand tips and tricks will be useful for you to make your baby get a better sleep at night.
