At this age, your son should be between 12 - 20 kgs. If he falls within this range he can be considered of normal weight. Prematurity has nothing to do with his weight at around 4 years of age, so if your son isn't gaining weight it is not because of being premature. Over the years, premature babies also catch up to normal growth requirements.
The first thing to consider is the diet he is receiving. You should check whether he gets food from all the essential groups and some choices include fruits, vegetables, oats, rice, cereals, yoghurt, cheese, soups, fresh juices, milk and eggs. You should provide your son with 3 good meals a day with a few healthy snacks in between. Around this age, he should be eating on his own and preferably with the rest of the family. Do not allow him to watch TV or conduct other activities while he is eating food. Ask him what he would like to eat as this will help him be a part of the decisions. Avoid snacks like chips, sugary drinks, chocolates and candy. This is not good for his health and has no nutritious value.
At this age your son is going to be stubborn and test your patience. You need to approach him with understanding and explain to him the benefits of a good meal. Tell him it will give him the strength to take part in his daily activities, help him grow and fight all the nasty germs. Good Luck!
