At around 2 years, children commonly know 100 words which increase to about 300 at the age of 3 years. Children are able to form 2 word sentences. Some children are able to follow commands and are can recognise their parents as "mama" or "dada."
- Talk to your son like you would to anyone else. Let him see how adults communicate.
- Read books to him and tell him to repeat easy words.
- Make him follow simple commands; for example, ask him to get you a ball.
- Make him play with other children his age, as he will learn to communicate with them.
If your son does not speak even a few words it is advisable to visit his paediatrician. Sometimes difficulty in hearing or fluid in the ears can result in children not being able to speak at a younger age. Right now there is no need to be concerned. With time he will pick up more words.
