The idea of adoption is life-changing for a parent-to-be. Changes have been witnessed in the society too. The age-old beliefs, regarding adoption as a taboo has taken a turn. Now it is viewed with considerate glimpses rather than the stern looks. Children are god’s gift and the bitter truth is that some of the god’s gifts are left alone without a receiver.
Adoption enables to take these precious gifts home and make a heaven. Various reason can lead to adoption, be it infertility, the desire or wish to expand a family at a later stage or the wish of a single adult to raise a child on his/her own.
There are almost thousands of children that are abandoned by their biological parents. Adoption for them is the rescue vehicle to a better place with a better set of parents.
Know it all: How, When and Where
The checklist is a long one once the couple decides to adopt a child and each point or say, each step in the adoption process is vital. The first step is to approach a state recognised Specialised Adoption agency, there are numerous agencies, organisations that might mislead but we must be well aware of the pros and cons of this procedure.
The visual of simple adoption proceedings that have been grafted into our brains by various advertisements, movies and daily soaps are not all true. Instead, the path of adoption includes some bumpers which the ones decided to travel this way need to cross.
Steps for Adopting a New Life:
Like mentioned above, adoption is not a one day deal. It takes time and patience. According to place the rules of adoption are different. One country rules will differ from another, according to the need of both the sides (the would-be-parent and the child) therefore it is essential to have prior basic information about the adoption terms and conditions. The basic adoption proceeding is –
#Step-1 Registration is the first step. The parent/parents willing to adopt must submit the required documents to a licensed adopted placement agency. Some agencies at this point might suggest on pre-adoptive counselling (enhances the understanding of adoption).
#Step-2 Detail study and fieldwork is carried out by the agency thus giving a start to the process of adoption.
#Step-3 Once a child is identified and fits the category, the respective parents are called upon by the agency to meet.
#Step-4 If the consent of the parents is given, the agencies according to their method may hand over the child but only after the foster care agreement is signed.
#Step-5 After all such process, the legal actions take over. The agency helps to complete the legal work by the agency’s lawyer, who files a petition to adopt on behalf of the couple with the court or can even approach the Juvenile Justice Board.
#Step-6 In the final step, both the agency representative and parent must register the adoption deed at the registrar’s which legally finalises the adoption process. Now the parents can apply and officially claim the birth certificate.
Age Is Not Just a Number:
Age is a factor that needs to be pondered upon while thinking of adoption. The maximum age as regarded by most agencies is 45-55 and there should be an age difference of 21 years between the adoptive parent and the child.
Read about Foster Care:
In one of the points described in the adoption procedure, there is the description of foster care. Basically, foster care system can be defined as is a setup primarily to take care of a child or children who have been abandoned by their biological parent.
Purpose of Foster Care:
The goal of foster care for a child is to reunite with the birth family. When all hope ends in this process, the procedure is taken a step ahead to adoption which can be regarded as the best to the interest of the child and his/her future.
Foster Care Child Adoption Process:
Adoption from the foster care can happen in a two-way process.
First is the Foster adoption which is a form of adoption in which a child is given a home as a foster child, it is expected that the child will become legally available and be adopted by the foster parents, but in some cases, the children are not adopted by their foster parents. Their birth parents rights are aborted and they become legally applicable for adoption.
Child Adoption in India:
The child adoption centres and agencies in India are taken care by Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA)
Adopted persons are no different from the biological ones; the one thing in them that might differ is the psychological aspect. The adoption process, past livelihood, all such events and experiences of the adopted ones may affect their psyche thus bringing in a change to the way they see the world around them.
Their ways of dealing with things may be the consequence of the past experience and conditions. Grief, feelings of loss, uncertainty, doubts and questions about self-identity, all these emotions and thoughts might pile up and haunt an adopted child at different stages of their lives.
Therefore extra care should be taken by the parents in building a healthy environment both inside and outside the house. It is not only the parent that holds the responsibility but the entire family members need to work together to include him/her as their own kind.
Adoption- Where only love and care matters:
Adoption can be that of a baby or a grown-up child. In both the cases care, love and attention must be bestowed. These are the topmost priority of the parents which needs to be exercised without fail. A baby needs extra care from the new mother.
To establish a perfect bond with your child, spend enough time, communicate with a happy tone, spent family time with him/her, play games, cuddle, fed, perform each of their daily activity in ways that they feel special, appreciate, indulge in physical endearment and make him/her realise how important and unique he/she is.
All such deeds, in turn, will inculcate a sense of belonging, thus bridging the hearts and making the bond between parent and the child strong, healthy and secure.
Bridging the gap and spreading the love:
Adoption is a boon. It is the path which introduces unknown souls to become soul mates for a lifetime. Thus we can say that adoption makes the world a better place; it wipes away the tears and paints happiness in the brightest hue.
