best positions to get pregnant

Amita has been trying to conceive for the past one year, she’s struggling through the constant disappointment.

Somya is looking forward to motherhood but she hasn’t been able to conceive yet and she’s losing her sex drive.

This post is for all the Amita’s and Somya’s, let me take you on a journey towards a wanted and anticipated pregnancy. It is fun and creates a strong bond between the partners. The anticipation is the fun part of the process. Some women can get pregnant right away, but some can take a little time to conceive. The waiting can be a little worrisome. But, there is no reason to lose heart, as modern medical science has an array of options that you can use to conceive. But the best way is still to keep on trying in a conventional way.

Try new positions, try getting a little more intimate, urge yourself to orgasm, there are many tricks that can spice up your sex life and help you conceive. One of the most frequent complaints from people who are trying to get pregnant is that sex gets too mechanical as it is controlled by timing, ovulation cycles and so on.

What are the basic steps in increasing fertility?

There are no wrong positions to conceive but there are a few tips that will help you do it more effectively. All sexual positions are geared towards helping the sperm reach the egg, but some positions may help a little more than the others. There are actually no scientific evaluations about the efficacy of these sex positions helping the process of getting pregnant, but the pleasure is in trying them. There is nothing to lose, as you will end up having fun all the same.

The couple should work at being healthy and agile before you even start planning a baby. Overall good health is important to boost fertility in both partners. Your BMI should be in normal range, as a higher BMI may be a deterrent to hormone health. Folic acid intake should be adequate as it does help in conceiving a healthy baby and you should avoid smoking and alcohol. Once these precautions are in place, start trying these positions to create magic in the boudoir and conceive at the same time.

Best Time to Have Sex While Trying to Conceive

Having sex in the peak fertility period is a big plus when it comes to getting pregnant. It is important to know your ovulation dates. You must have an ovulation calendar handy to know the fertility window. Most women ovulate 14 days before the last date of the cycle. The most effective copulation is within 5 days leading to ovulation and the day after the event.

You can check your temperature as it increases a little just before ovulation, check for clear and sticky vaginal discharge to ascertain ovulation. It is generally advisable to have sex every alternate day in these 6 days. Sperm can be active for up to 72 hours while the egg is available in the fallopian tubes for 48 odd hours, so this alternate day sex theory is generally very effective.

Best Sex Positions To Help You Conceive

You may find many sex positions listed on the internet telling you that it is the most effective in helping you conceive, but the common factor in all of these is that you must not get up for at least 15 minutes after sex.

This may be even better if you keep a pillow under your hips to help the sperm travel faster. It is pure physics as gravity helps a downward trajectory. This is the advice given to women who are trying to conceive with assistance, that is, by getting the sperm injected into their uterus.

It may actually also help while you are trying in the good old conventional way. British studies show that nearly 27% of the women who followed this got pregnant if they were in supine position after the IUI (Intra uterine Insemination) as against 17% who got up immediately after the procedure.

#1. Missionary Position

The Missionary position or man on top position might be the best way to help you conceive. In this position, the sperm has to swim downstream with gravity and can reach the cervix with relative ease. If you want the process to be further enhanced you can put a pillow under your hip. This makes the angle of travel even more favorable for the sperm.

#2. Doggie Style Position

Doggie style sex is very enjoyable as there is deep penetration. As a bonus, the sperm gets a chance to get as close to the cervix as possible and conception is more possible. The doggie style is when the woman is on her knees and the man enters her from behind.

#3. Coital Alignment Position

Coital Alignment position is when the woman opens up her knees and the man fits his lower torso between her legs. The motion is not a thrusting one, but rather that of meshing the pelvises together and rocking towards orgasm. This gives the couple a deep penetration and also helps the sperm get the benefit of gravity while swimming downstream.

#4. Enhanced Missionary Position

The missionary style can be further enhanced if the woman can put her legs on the man’s shoulders while making love. This helps in deeper penetration and also allows the sperm an enhanced chance of reaching its target.

#5. Side by Side Scissor Position

Side by side scissor position as the name suggests is when you lie side by side with the partners facing each other. The man enters the woman sidewise and the deepest penetration is possible making the journey for the sperm a tad easier.

MRI imaging has thrown up an interesting finding. A rear entry by the man during sex when the woman lies on her stomach and the man enters her from behind may facilitate a very deep penetration. This is probably the position where the penis reaches most deeply into the vaginal opening. It may help men with smaller penises to effect a deep penetration.

#6. Wheelbarrow Position

If you are adequately fit, the wheelbarrow position may be of great use to you. This position is quite adventurous and requires flexibility and core strength. The woman takes the position like a wheelbarrow with the hands-on floor or elbows on the bed. The man will have to hold the woman’s legs and position himself with his thighs between hers making an entry from behind.

This allows a deep penetration and also allows a smoother journey for the sperm. This position is a lot of fun, and you can tick it off your list during this time, as it is not advisable to try it after you are pregnant.

#7. Reverse Cowgirl Position

Nearly 20% of women are born with a tipped uterus and can have a little trouble getting pregnant. To make conception easier, she can use the reverse cowgirl position. In this position, the woman is on top facing away from her partner. She rides him with her face away from him, creating a unique angle of penetration.

Till you have had a sonography you really do not know whether you have a retroverted uterus. But this position will definitely add to the zing factor in your sexual life.

Role of Orgasms in the Conception Process

There are many arguments being put forth about the role of orgasms in the process of conception. The man obviously needs to orgasm and ejaculate for the sperm to be released. But the role of the female orgasm has often been debated.

The use of lubricants is generally a big No when you are trying to conceive.  The pH balance of the lubricant can make conception difficult, warm water is recommended if you really need one. It is often a better idea to use foreplay as a way to provide lubrication. Although it varies from woman to woman 15 to 20 minutes should on an average provide adequate lubrication for the sperm to find a conducive passage.

The female orgasm has not been found to be a necessity in the process of getting pregnant but small studies do point out that the mild contractions caused by an orgasm in the uterus may actually help the sperm to move faster towards their goal. This is also possible without a proper orgasm as the uterus does undergo mild movements during sex.

The dreams of having a baby can be fulfilled a tad easier if you follow these broad guidelines.  But, do remember that these positions are only providing you with a better chance if all else is normal.

If you are under thirty and have been trying to get pregnant for over 12 months following these steps, you might want to consult a fertility expert along with your partner. If you are 35 or more years of age do see the doctor after trying for 6 months. Save yourself the heartache as sometimes small but niggling issues can be sorted fast and you could be on your way to parenthood very soon.

Till the time you are pregnant and many positions become out of bounds for you for some months, do go ahead and enjoy yourself having a varied and enjoyable sex life. Healthy foreplay and new positions that allow deeper penetration will make your journey to being a parent a lot of fun and frolic!
