Choosing The Best Baby Diapers For Your Kids

Last Updated on September 12, 2017  by Team Babygogo

Babies don’t ask for much from their parents. If one lists them out, it would include : love, attention, food/feeding and … diapers, to catch all the mess they can create. Studies show that in a day a baby uses 6 to 8 diapers on an average. Thus, it is safe to say that one can associate baby diapers with kid’s health, well being and hygiene.

Like everything else, baby diapers too, have their set of vices. Even though they save the day by not spoiling your baby’s cute outfit, baby diapers can be uncomfortable and can cause rashes on your baby’s soft skin. However, all of these problems can easily be avoided if few precautions are taken.

With the abundance of types of baby diapers around, one can choose the type that suits the requirements. Some of the most commonly used types are disposables, pull-ups and cloth diapers.

While disposable baby diapers are the most extensively used style of diapers, there is a sudden shift towards cloth diapers. Owe it to the environmental awareness or cost efficiency, there has been a sudden boom in the sales of cloth diapers. However, the best suitable option for busy parents seems to be pant style diapers; they are easy to wear and easier to dispose off.

Now from companies, we move on to the types of diapers available in Indian market. One thing to keep in mind is that you should choose the product that suits your requirements perfectly.

Types of baby diapers available

Disposables

Disposable diapers are designed to keep older babies dry during the night. Incase they urinate while they are asleep, these keep them dry and can be changed in the morning. There are various sizes available. Moreover, there are different variations in the market for girls and boys.

Pull ups

These are diapers that look a bit more like a regular underwear. These are now being designed while keeping the efficiency of products in mind, thus, the absorbency pads are now placed depending upon the gender. Moreover, some products even help potty train the baby. The idea is to make the child experience a little wetness so that they know when they have to go to the washroom.

Cloth Diapers

These are usually made out of absorbent fabrics like cotton, fleece or terry. Organic cotton and eco friendly diapers are now ready to take over the market, even if they cost a little more. Many cite environmental concerns as one of the primary reason for choosing cloth diapers. Some cloth diapers which are less expensive are required to be washed and cleaned after every cycle.

Fitted or Contour Diapers

Shaped just like disposables, Fitted diapers come with a narrow crotch and wide wings that wrap around a baby’s waist. These require fasteners. Some diapers come fitted with elastic at the waist and legs, and a more absorbent layer right in the center.

Pre-folded diapers

Depending on how you fold them, these diapers can be converted to accommodate a lot of different absorption needs of boys and girls. Typically, these come with folding instructions that differ for boys and girls.

Pocket diapers

These diapers consist of a waterproof covering which includes a pocket in which you can insert the folded diaper or the disposable diaper. These come in a range of sizes.

Pull-up diapers or Regular diapers

Of late, a sudden shift of trend has been seen in the market. Parents of young babies tend to go for pant style diapers. We did a comparative study about the same:

Pull-up pant style diapers come with an elastic band at the waist. These can also act as training pants as they are like small underwear; easy to put on and off. During the time of potty training, pull up pants are more convenient. The cost of pant style diapers, however, is more than the usual diapers. Thus, it is advisable to put them on when you’re heading out and you want the diaper changing process hasslefree. Moreover, as the baby gets older, you would find it hard to keep them still and thus, switching to pant style diapers makes an intelligent decision.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of baby diapers

Disadvantages of diapers for babies

1. Leaks:

The main purpose of using diapers is to prevent leakage. However, in a lot of cases, they are not successful in preventing them. Some designs are not suitable enough for random movements babies are capable of.

2. Rashes:

Rashes are a common problems faced by infants throughout the globe. However, it can be easily avoided by choosing a brand that doesn’t have a harsh crease that can cause a rash.

3. Comfort:

Diapers tend to make the baby uncomfortable. The key is to always ensure that your baby wears the right size of diaper and doesn’t leave any mark on your baby’s soft skin.

4. Cost:

Diapers are, perhaps, the largest cost hole in a young parent’s pocket. The best way to ensure a great deal is to get online and go through online shopping portals.

Advantages of diapers for babies

1. Convenience:

Diapers help provide healthy and hygienic standard of living. Not only do they help keep the baby clean, they are easy to use and dispose off.

2. Easy Change:

Diapers can be easily changed and disposed off. Once used, they ensure that the baby remains clean at all times without much restriction in their movements.

Next thing which you might wonder about is, Cloth Nappy vs Disposable Diapers, what should you prefer? Let’s peek in to the important aspects you need to remember while choosing between the two ;

Things to keep in mind While buying disposable baby diapers

  1. Do not buy economy packs for newborn babies.
    – Baby is likely to outgrow the newborn size before you could use that many.
  2. Do not jump to bigger size.
    – Bigger sized baby diaper implies more money. It will cost you more when the baby can actually wear the small size comfortably and economically.
  3. Pay heed to the cleanliness and the moisturisation part to avoid rashes.
    – You would constantly have to change the disposable diapers to avoid rashes. You cannot just put that diaper on your baby and forget about it.
    – Apply powder and rash free cream every time you change your baby’s diaper.
  4. Order the diaper based on your baby’s weight.
  5. Be clear about your preferences while choosing the brand
    – Target down and understand what is it that you are looking for while choosing the brand.
    – Do you want it to be soft? Hygienic? Environmentally safe? Cost efficient?

Things to keep in mind while buying cloth baby diapers

  1. Make sure you buy enough diapers that can fit into your laundry cycle.
  2. Ensure that the cloth you select is gentle to your baby’s skin.
  3. For hygiene purpose cloth diapers require regular washing and cleaning.
  4. Be prepared to expand your baby care kit.
  5. Ensure that poop disposal is done correctly.
  6. If not tied and set properly, leakage rate can be high in cloth nappies.

With all this information at your disposal, your diaper sense can never go wrong!
